Candidate Obama said the following about Guantanamo Bay while running for the presidency:
I intend to close Guantanamo, and I will follow through on that. I have said repeatedly that America doesn’t torture. And I’m gonna make sure that we don’t torture. Those are part and parcel of an effort to regain America’s moral stature in the world.
And for those that don’t like the printed version, here is the video clip from the 60 Minutes interview –
This is what Senator Obama, and later Candidate Obama, said about the indefinite detention of detainees at Guantanamo Bay:
From Salon.com –
“The Court’s decision is a rejection of the Bush Administration’s attempt to create a legal black hole at Guantanamo – yet another failed policy supported by John McCain. This is an important step toward reestablishing our credibility as a nation committed to the rule of law, and rejecting a false choice between fighting terrorism and respecting habeas corpus.”
In a speech on the Senate floor, Obama said –
“…a perfectly innocent individual could be held and could not rebut the Government’s case and has no way of proving his innocence…But what is avoidable is refusing to ever allow our legal system to correct these mistakes… restricting somebody’s right to challenge their imprisonment indefinitely is not going to make us safer. In fact, recent evidence shows it is probably making us less safe…”
Clearly Senator Obama, and later Candidate Obama, made it abundantly clear that the indefinite detention of detainees at Guantanamo Bay without the due process of a trial is wrong on all grounds – legal, ethical, and moral. He even goes as far as to say that it works against us in our war on terror.
Now, let’s compare that to what has just happened recently…
The National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) has been sent to Obama who has said that he will sign it into law. Now, pay attention, this is the part of the law that should frighten all Americans –
From Business Insider –
“…allowing the U.S. military to arrest and hold anyone it deems a terrorist, even on American soil.”
But wait, there’s an even more terrifying part –
“The minor adjustments to the wording now give the President power to issue a waiver of the military detention requirement and allow the White House to use its own judgment in putting the controls into place.”
Obama now has the power to decide who can and cannot be held indefinitely without trial including AMERICANS!! The same politician who railed against it when it was only Muslim terrorists is now allowing Americans to be held without trial by being the President to sign the bill into law.
Where is the liberal outrage? Where are the progressives demanding Obama to be tried for war crimes? Why haven’t the Occupiers camped out on the White House law?
- From The Huffington Post – You will find nothing about indefinite detention – much less the fact that it will include Americans.
- From Politicususa.com – You will find that the focus of the blame for the law is on the Congress – even though Obama has the power to veto it and Obama has the sole discretion of who is and who is not a terrorist. It even goes as far to laud Obama for his many successes in the war against terrorism.
- From Raw Story – They make it seem like that all U.S. citizens who are deemed to be terrorist suspects are now exempt from indefinite detention. (They don’t even mention that it is only Obama who has the right to waive that requirement.)
- From MotherJones.com – They are making the claim that even the military detention of non-citizens is optional – saying the “Underwear Bomber” could go to trial without passing through military custody. (What planet are they living on?)
So, there you have it folks!! According to liberal rhetoric when Bush was President, Obama should now be tried for war crimes because he now has the power to decide who can and cannot be held indefinitely.
But liberals don’t want you to know that Obama would be the one who “enshrined indefinite detention without trial in U.S. law.”
